Framed, untitled 1986 silkscreen abstract with artist in a beret, in royal blue and black over a mauve watercolor wash, signed in pencil by Jiri "Georg" Dokoupil and numbered 30 of 33 made. Natural stained wood frame over plexiglass measures 29.5" W x 30" H x 1.75" D with a 22" x 22.5" mount. Painter and graphic artist Dokoupil (1954 - ) founded German neo-expressionist artist groups Mülheimer Freiheit and ensuing Junge Wilde in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He lives and works between Spain, Brazil and Bulgaria. Born in Krnov, then Czechoslovakia, he escaped with his family over Austria to Germany in 1968 after the Soviets invaded Prague. He later studied concept art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cologne and the Universities of Frankfurt and the Cooper Union in New York. By 1982 Dokoupil had his first solo exhibition and shared a studio of six Jungen Wilden ("Young Wild Ones" ) on Mülheimer Freiheit street in Cologne. Conceptual art, they thought, had become too stilted and formalized.Since then, Dokoupil's work has been seen in numerous one-man shows in galleries, museums and at other cultural sites worldwide.
