#66 • Antique Gold Plated Japanese Palanquin in Glass Display Case
Part of Treasures of the Past & Present: Fine Art, Asian Antiques, Furniture & Rare Collectibles (timed auction by Lux Auctions)
High bid $30.00
Status: Sold
This wooden and glass display case highlights a miniature Japanese palanquin. These were transportation litters, traditionally used in Asia, consisting of a box-like structure or chair carried by bearers on poles. It was a common form of transportation for royalty and those of high status, typically used for one person. The piece is made of solid brass, covered in a shiny gold plate (likely 24k) highlighting the carvings represented throughout. The removable middle section of the palanquin's roof can be raised or removed to allow a more clear view inside. Inside, a mural of trees covers the walls, and a rug and plush cushion provide comfort for the rider. The case is accessible by removing the glass top, and the palanquin is loose inside and can be moved. A lovely Japanese character is painted on the back wall of the case, providing additional interest. Please see all photos for further detail. Palanquin: 5"H x 11"W x 3.75"D Case 10.5H x 17"W x 9"D.
